Reports from the Muncie Star Press comfirms that the Emerald Ash Borer has found it’s greedy little way to Muncie, Indiana. If you are not familiar with this tree killing insect, here is a video I grabbed on Youtube that give you more of an explanation.

The Problem For Campers:

It is getting harder and harder to bring wood into local campgrounds due to this insect. The Emerald Ash Borer is slowly destroying our forests.

Before long you will no longer be able to bring your own wood and be forced to purchase wood from the facility that you are camping at. We all know that the campgrounds charge an arm and a leg for a bundle of wood, so make sure that you are careful when selecting what you bring to your local hot spot.

Here is a quote from WIKI that tells the danger in a couple sentences.

“The adult emerald ash borer emerges in May–July and the female lays numerous eggs in bark crevaces and between layers of bark. The eggs hatch in 7–10 days and larvae bore into the tree where they chew the inner bark and phloem creating winding galleries as they feed. This cuts off the flow of the water and nutrients in the tree, causing dieback and death.”

“If someone lives within two miles of that park or any other known locations, they definitely need to consider managing the tree now,” he said. “If someone has an ash tree that is of healthy quality with no dieback and it is an important specimen tree with unique value, they should consider treating the tree if they want to do that.”
