If you know many people who spend much time camping in Indiana, then I am sure that you have heard some horror stories about their stays in various campgrounds. I know in all my years of camping throughout the state I could honestly tell a million stories of the people who were camping around me that made my trip almost dreadful.

Inside this article I am going to share with you a few things that you should never do as a responsible camper. Knowing these things and respecting them will allow you to know that the people around you are always going to enjoy their trip as much as you want to.

Remember, treat others as you would like to be treated.

Being a messy camper. Nobody enjoys a filthy camper. You should always maintain your camping site. The rule that my dad and grandpa taught me was this: “leave your camp cleaner than it was when you came.” This is pretty much how I live my life when it comes to camping. Pick it up, clean it and keep it clean.

Respect quiet time. You always have to remember that camping is a hobby of all people of all ages. Maybe you enjoy being up late or partying, but remember that there are many elderly and families with small children that need to get their sleep. There is nothing worse in a campground than a group of people that make more noise than a herd of buffalo.

Control your dog. I have been in campground so many time and can tell an endless story about a neighboring camper that has a dog that barks all day and all night. Dogs are very curious animals and typically like to bark at anything that they don’t recognize. Noises, people and animals. If you have an overactive dog, it is probably not a good idea to bring him or her to the campground no matter how much you love them.

Don’t walk through campsites. This one for me is the biggest. No one likes when people walk through their sites. Even if your favorite fishing spot is right on the other side of their site, make sure you find a route that goes around them. Remember, your camping site is your home for the duration of the trip and you don’t want anyone walking through your yard.

Those are four things that I think about the most and bothers me the most when I am camping. Make sure you don’t break any of those rules while you are camping and your neighbors will never know that you are there, which is always best.
